Baby blankets are used to keep your baby warm, cozy, and comfortable. The blanket is no substitute for a parent’s or grandparents’ snuggle and hug. However, they provide the much-needed comfort that a baby can get while away from the crib.
Medical experts have not recommended blankets for children below 18 months of age. Using a blanket may lead to suffocation or SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) while in the crib. However, you may use the blanket to keep your baby warm and relaxed when not in the crib.
In today’s post, we’ll explore the factors needed to consider while selecting baby blankets.
Picking the perfect baby blanket
Selecting the correct baby blanket matters as their size and feel will mostly tell what comforts your baby.
- Buying the right size– As babies grow in size, you will find that the blanket you bought is no longer of any use. While this is bound to happen, it would help if you bought that size that might last longer or can be repurposed, passed on, or preserved for any other future use.
- Ideal size to cover the baby adequately– The blanket size should be big enough to cover the baby except for its face and head. The blanket shouldn’t even be too big, so much so that it becomes difficult to wash or take while traveling.
- Skin-friendly material– Cotton should ideally be your best bet or a blanket layered with cotton underneath. Blankets that are too furry may pose a risk to babies. The fur can come out loose and reach into the nostrils or mouth of the baby, leading to suffocation or breathing challenges.
- Avoid buying a hooded blanket– A hooded blanket may cover your baby’s head and face, leading to suffocation.
- Swaddle blanket – If you want the blanket to wrap around your baby, a swaddle blanket helps. It gives them the same feeling as being held in their arms or being in the womb.
